Sensopedic Mattress Guide: Firm, Plush, Pillowtop & More

You spend about a third of your life in bed, so a mattress is worth choosing carefully. Sensopedic mattresses come in six comfort styles, and the names can sound alike if you are new to them. This guide explains each one in simple terms so you can match a mattress to the way you like to sleep. It is about comfort preference, not medical treatment, so choose what feels right for you.
Firmness: what the words mean
Firmness describes how hard or soft the surface feels when you lie on it. There is no single correct level. It comes down to personal taste, body weight and sleeping position.
- Extra firm: a very solid, flat feel with little give. People who like a hard, supportive surface often choose this.
- Firm: still solid, with a touch more cushioning than extra firm.
- Plush: soft and cushioned, so your body sinks in a little.
- Pillowtop, boxtop and eurotop: these have an extra layer of padding stitched on top for a softer, more cushioned surface feel.
Because the top layers differ, these three feel noticeably softer when you first lie down than a plain firm model, even though the base underneath may be solid.
Choosing by sleeping position
These are general guidelines, not rules, and nothing replaces lying on a mattress and trying it.
- Back sleepers: many prefer firm or extra firm, which keeps the surface even.
- Side sleepers: often like something with more cushioning, such as plush, pillowtop or eurotop, so shoulders and hips are not pressing on a hard surface.
- Stomach sleepers: usually find a firmer surface more comfortable.
- Couples with different tastes: a medium choice, such as firm or pillowtop, can be a good compromise.
If you are unsure, think about hotel beds you have enjoyed or the one at a relative's home that you always sleep well on, and tell us what you liked about it.

Trying before you decide
Comfort is personal, so if you can, lie on a mattress in your usual sleeping position for a few minutes rather than just sitting on the edge. Notice whether your shoulders and hips feel comfortable, and whether you feel too hot or too sunk in. Remember that a new mattress can feel different for the first week or two as you get used to it, so give it a fair chance.
If two people share the bed, both should lie on it together. What suits one person's weight and position may feel too firm or too soft for the other, and the right choice is the one you can both live with every night.
How sizes work
Mattresses are sold in several sizes, and the price goes up as the size gets bigger. Every mattress product page has a size list with the cash price and monthly figure for each option. For example, on the extra firm model the One & Half size is GH₵ 3,899, while the Full/Double size is GH₵ 4,899. Larger sizes such as Queen are priced higher again, and you will see the full list on the page.
Before you order, measure your bed frame, not just the room. A mattress that is too big will not sit properly, and one that is too small leaves gaps. If you are replacing an old mattress, measure it and tell us the dimensions. Also check the doorway and staircase so the new mattress can be carried in.
Practical tips before you buy
Think about who will use the bed. A child's room, a guest room and a main bedroom may call for different comfort levels. Rotate your mattress from time to time if the maker's care guide allows it, and use a mattress protector to guard against spills and sweat in our warm climate. Make sure your bed base is solid and level so the mattress is well supported.
You can browse every option in the mattresses category. If paying in one go is difficult, our hire purchase option lets you spread the cost over 4 months, and the monthly amount is shown for each size.
Matching a mattress to the room
A main bedroom often calls for the most comfortable option you can afford, because you use it every night. A guest room can stay simple and solid. For children, many families prefer a firmer surface that keeps its shape as they grow. For a hostel, boarding house or rental, a durable firm model is a practical choice because it takes daily use from different people.
