Choosing an Air Conditioner for Accra: 1.0HP to 2.5HP Guide

Choosing an Air Conditioner for Accra: 1.0HP to 2.5HP Guide

Accra is hot and humid for most of the year, so a good air conditioner is more than a luxury for many bedrooms, offices and shops. But buying one that is too small leaves you sweating, and one that is too large wastes money. Here is a clear guide to the sizes, the types and what to do after you buy.

What HP means on an air conditioner

HP stands for horsepower, and on an AC it is a rough indicator of cooling power. A higher HP number means the unit can cool a larger space. It does not tell you everything, because insulation, ceiling height, sun exposure and the number of people in the room all matter. Still, it is the first number to check.

Rule of thumb: HP and room size

These are general ranges, not guarantees. Always confirm with the team before you buy.

A room with a lot of sun on the walls, a high ceiling, a kitchen nearby or many people usually needs to go one size up. If you are between sizes, ask for advice rather than guessing.

Split AC: what you are buying

All the air conditioners we list are split units. That means two parts: an indoor unit mounted on the wall that blows cool air, and an outdoor unit that sits outside and carries the compressor. A split system is generally quieter indoors than a window unit, and it can be placed neatly on a wall. The two parts are linked by pipes and cables, so installation by a trained technician matters.

Installation: do not rush it

A good AC can perform badly if it is fitted poorly. Keep these points in mind:

  1. Choose the wall carefully. The indoor unit should be high on the wall and not blocked by curtains or furniture.
  2. Keep the pipe run between indoor and outdoor units reasonably short and neat.
  3. The outdoor unit needs space for air flow and should be mounted securely, ideally out of direct sun and rain where possible.
  4. Use a proper circuit and a voltage protector. Power fluctuations can damage compressors.
  5. Ask the team about installation arrangements before you buy, so you know what to expect.

Servicing and care

Regular care keeps cooling strong and the electricity bill reasonable:

Paying for your AC

Each AC shows a monthly figure under our 4-month hire purchase plan. For example, the Sigma 1.5HP shows GH₵ 896 per month, and the Novo 2.0HP shows GH₵ 1,428 per month. See the hire purchase page for how the process works. Always compare the total over four months with the cash price, and confirm current numbers on WhatsApp.

Think about running costs

An air conditioner uses a lot of electricity compared with a fan, so plan for it in your monthly budget. Close the room properly, keep the filters clean and avoid cooling rooms that nobody is using. A correctly sized unit usually runs more efficiently than one that is too small and works flat out all day. Ask the team about the models you are comparing before you decide. If you plan to run the unit for many hours, for example in a shop or a rented room, mention this so the team can advise on the size that makes sense for your use and your budget.
