Buying a TV in Ghana: Screen Size, Smart TV, 4K and QLED

Walk into any electronics shop in Accra and you will see rows of TVs with labels like Smart, 4K, UHD and QLED. It can feel confusing, especially when the prices range so widely. Here is a plain guide to what the terms mean and how to match a TV to your room and your budget.
Start with the room, not the price
The best screen size depends on how far you sit from the TV. A common rule of thumb is that the viewing distance should be roughly two to three times the screen diagonal. As a general guide:
- 32 inch: bedrooms, kitchens, shops and small offices.
- 43 to 50 inch: a small to medium living room, or a bedroom where you sit further back.
- 55 to 65 inch: a standard family living room.
- 70 to 75 inch: a large living room, a lounge, a church hall or a small business space.
If you are unsure, measure the distance from your sofa to the wall, and share it with our team on WhatsApp.
What does Smart TV mean?
A Smart TV connects to Wi-Fi so you can open apps such as YouTube or streaming services without a separate box. Some use Android, such as the Sigma 43 inch Smart TV (Android 14), and others use Tizen, such as the Tizen 55 inch QLED Smart TV. A plain TV like the 32 inch TV at GH₵ 1,200 does the basics for people who only want to watch channels.
Remember that smart features need an internet connection, so budget for data or Wi-Fi.
4K and UHD explained
4K, also called UHD, means a sharper picture with more pixels than older Full HD. The benefit is most visible on bigger screens, where smaller screens hide the difference. So 4K matters more on a 55 inch or larger TV than on a 32 inch set. You will find it in models like the Sigma 50 inch QLED 4K Smart TV (Android) and the LG 70 inch UHD Smart TV.
QLED in simple terms
QLED is a screen technology that uses a layer called quantum dots to produce brighter, richer colours. In practice, it often means a more vivid picture, which is helpful in bright Ghanaian living rooms with a lot of daylight. It is a step up from a basic LED panel, but it is not a must. If your budget is tight, a good Smart TV in the right size gives a better experience than a QLED that stretches your finances.

Practical tips before you buy
- Check where the TV will go. A wall bracket or a stand is a separate decision from the TV itself.
- Plan a surge protector. Power fluctuations are hard on electronics.
- Check the ports you need, such as HDMI for a decoder or a game console.
- Measure the width of the TV against your cabinet or wall space, because a 65 inch screen is wider than many people expect.
- Ask about the exact specifications of the model you like, instead of assuming.
Paying for your TV
Each TV on our site shows a monthly figure under our 4-month hire purchase plan. For example, the Sigma 43 inch Smart TV shows GH₵ 730 per month and the Sigma 50 inch QLED 4K Smart TV shows GH₵ 1,148 per month. Read how it works on the hire purchase page, and compare the total over four months with the cash price before deciding.
Sound and daily use
Thin modern TVs often have modest built-in speakers. If you watch a lot of football, films or church broadcasts, you may want to add a sound bar or a home theatre later. Also think about who will use the TV most. A 32 inch smart set can be perfect for a child's room or a small shop, while a family that gathers every evening will enjoy a bigger screen. Choose for the way you live, not just the label on the box.
