How to Choose a Refrigerator for Your Home in Ghana

A fridge runs day and night for years, so it is one of the most important appliances you will buy. In Accra's heat, a fridge that is too small, or the wrong style for your kitchen, quickly becomes a daily frustration. This guide walks you through the choices in plain language so you can decide with confidence.
Start with litres: match the fridge to your household
Capacity is measured in litres and it is usually in the product name. As a general rule of thumb, not a strict law:
- One or two people, or a single room: around 80 to 135 litres is usually enough for drinks, leftovers and a few staples.
- Small family of three to four: roughly 180 to 200 litres gives space for a week of cooked food, water and vegetables.
- Larger family or frequent visitors: look at 400 litres and above, especially if you buy groceries in bulk or cook large pots of soup and stew.
If you often host family, run a small food business from home, or shop only once a month, go one size up. A fridge that is packed tight cools less evenly, and it is hard to find anything inside.
Understand the door styles
Table top fridge. Small, fits under a counter or on a table, and ideal for a bedroom, office or hostel. The Novo Table Top Fridge is listed at GH₵ 2,040, and the Novo Table Top Double Door Fridge 80 Litres at GH₵ 1,800.
Double door fridge. The freezer compartment sits on top, with the fridge below. This is the most popular family layout and it suits most Ghanaian kitchens. Examples include the Double Door Fridge 95 Litres at GH₵ 2,200 and the Novo 183RFDD Refrigerator 183 Litres at GH₵ 3,700.
French door fridge. Two doors open at the top for the fridge section, with a freezer drawer below. These are wide and tall, so they need a proper kitchen space. See the Novo French Door Refrigerator 445 Litres at GH₵ 7,700.
Side-by-side fridge. The freezer and fridge stand next to each other, each with its own tall door. The Novo 410SBS Side-by-Side Refrigerator is listed at GH₵ 7,500. Because the doors are narrower, they open well even in a tighter kitchen, but you still need to measure the width.
Measure before you buy
Many buyers pick a fridge in the shop and then discover it will not pass through the gate, the staircase or the kitchen door. Before you order:
- Measure the space where the fridge will stand, then leave a few centimetres at the back and sides for air to move.
- Measure the narrowest point on the way in, such as the gate, corridor or door frame.
- Check the direction the door opens so it does not hit a wall or another appliance.
Send the measurements to the team on WhatsApp and they can help you confirm what suits your space.
Power cuts and voltage: protect your fridge
Power fluctuations are part of life in many Ghanaian neighbourhoods. A few habits make a big difference to how long a fridge lasts:
- Plug the fridge into a good voltage protector or stabiliser, not straight into an overloaded extension board.
- After a power cut, wait a few minutes before the fridge restarts rather than switching it on and off repeatedly.
- Keep the door closed during an outage. A full, closed fridge holds its cold for longer than an open or half-empty one.
- Do not push the fridge tight against the wall. Leave breathing room so the back can release heat.
- Defrost and clean according to the instructions that come with your model.
Ask the team about suitable voltage protection when you order, so everything is sorted in one conversation.
Plan your budget and your payment
Cash prices for fridges on our site currently run from about GH₵ 1,800 for compact units to GH₵ 7,920 for the Novo 460RFDD Refrigerator 460 Litres. Mid-size options such as the Novo 200RF Refrigerator 195 Litres sit at GH₵ 3,800.
If paying in one go is difficult, every product shows a monthly figure under our 4-month hire purchase plan. For instance, the 195 litre Novo 200RF shows GH₵ 1,061 per month. Read our hire purchase page for how it works. Prices can change, so always confirm the current price and monthly amount on WhatsApp before you decide.
Quick checklist before you choose
- Count the people in your home and pick a litre range from the guide above.
- Pick the door style that fits your kitchen space.
- Measure the space and the entry route.
- Plan for a voltage protector.
- Decide whether to pay cash or use hire purchase.
You can browse every model in our refrigerators category and compare sizes side by side.
Energy and running costs
A fridge is on all day, so think about running costs as well as the purchase price. A bigger fridge is not automatically more expensive to run if you fill it sensibly, but a huge fridge that stays half empty is wasted space and wasted power. Choose the size that matches how you really shop and cook. Ask the team about the specific model you like, and read the label on the appliance for the manufacturer's information.
