How to Pick a Washing Machine: Top Load vs Front Load

Washing by hand for a whole family is hard work, and Accra's heat and dust mean clothes pile up quickly. A washing machine gives you back hours every week, but the choices can be confusing: top load, front load, twin tub, 7kg, 12kg. This guide explains the differences in plain language so you can pick the right machine the first time.
The three types explained
Top load machines open from the lid on top. You can add a forgotten sock halfway through a cycle, and you do not have to bend down. They are the most familiar type in Ghana and are usually simpler to use.
Front load machines open through a round door at the front, like a washing machine in a laundrette. In general, front loaders tend to use less water than top loaders and are gentler on fabric, and many people like to stack or place a worktop over them. They need a little space in front to open the door.
Twin tub machines have two compartments side by side: one for washing and one for spinning. You move the clothes across by hand. They cost less, and because you control each stage, they suit homes where water supply is irregular or where people want to wash small batches or use water more than once. The trade-off is that you stay involved throughout.
Match the kilogram capacity to your household
The kg figure is the weight of dry clothes the drum can handle in one wash. As a simple rule of thumb:
- 1 to 2 people: 7kg or 8kg is usually enough.
- 3 to 4 people: 8kg to 10kg gives comfortable room.
- 5 or more people, or heavy items like bedsheets and school uniforms: 11kg or 12kg saves you from running many loads.
- Small laundry business or large family: go for the biggest drum you can afford.
Buying slightly bigger than you need is rarely a mistake. An overstuffed drum washes badly and strains the motor.
Real models you can compare

Water and power: what to think about
Automatic machines need a steady water supply and a reliable socket. If your tap pressure drops during the day, ask yourself whether you can fill from a tank or whether a twin tub would suit you better, since you control when water goes in.
On power, Ghana's voltage can fluctuate. A surge protector or a voltage stabiliser is a sensible, inexpensive way to protect any electronic appliance, including a washer. Place the machine on a level floor, keep the hose from kinking, and leave a little space behind it for ventilation.
General habits also help: do not overload the drum, use the right amount of detergent (more is not better), and wipe the door seal or lid area after use so it stays fresh in our humid climate.
Care tips that make a machine last
Sort clothes by colour and fabric, empty pockets, and zip up items that could snag. Clean the lint filter if your model has one, and leave the lid or door open for a while after washing so the drum can air out. Level the machine properly, because a rocking machine vibrates and wears out faster.
Which one should you choose?
Think about three things: how many people live in your home, how much you can pay now, and how much effort you want to put in. A student or couple might be happy with a 7kg or 8kg top loader. A growing family will appreciate 10kg to 12kg. If water is unpredictable or budget is tight, a twin tub is practical. If you want a gentler, neater setup and have the budget, look at the front loaders.
You do not have to pay everything at once. Our 4-month hire purchase plan spreads the cost, and the monthly figure is shown on every product page. Browse all models in the washing machines category.
