Novo, Sigma, TCL and LG: How to Choose Between Brands

Walk into any appliance shop in Accra and you will meet the same question: which brand should I buy? Novo, Sigma, TCL and LG all appear on our shelves at Okaishie, and each shopper has a friend who swears by one of them. This guide does not tell you one brand is best. It shows you what we stock from each, and how to compare fairly so you pick the right product for your home or shop.
What we stock from each brand
Brands tend to sit in different parts of the range, so the first step is simply to see where each one appears.
- Novo: the widest spread. Refrigerators, chest freezers, split air conditioners, washing machines, microwaves and air fryers.
- Sigma: split air conditioners, washing machines (twin tub, top load and front load), chest freezers and smart TVs.
- TCL: smart TVs, including a 43 inch model and a 50 inch QLED.
- LG: a 70 inch UHD smart TV for large living rooms.
We also stock Sensopedic mattresses and some unbranded or differently branded TVs and fridges. Prices and availability can change, so confirm the current list on our shop page or on WhatsApp.
Compare by category, not by name
A brand that suits you for a fridge may not be the one you want for a TV. Decide the product type first, then compare the models inside it.
For televisions, look at our TV range. Here you can place a Sigma 43 inch smart TV at GH₵ 2,600, a TCL 43 inch smart TV at GH₵ 3,500 and a Sigma 50 inch QLED 4K smart TV at GH₵ 4,100 side by side. The LG 70 inch UHD smart TV is GH₵ 13,000 and is aimed at someone who wants a very large screen. The numbers that matter are screen size, resolution, smart features and how far your sofa is from the wall.
For air conditioners, compare the HP rating and your room size. A Sigma 1.5HP split is GH₵ 3,200 and a Novo 1.5HP split is GH₵ 3,600. Both are 1.5HP, so ask us what is different about them rather than assuming the dearer one is better for you.
For washing machines, the useful comparison is type and capacity: twin tub, top load or front load, and 7kg up to 12kg. Brand matters less here than whether the machine matches your water supply and your family size.
Four things to compare on any appliance
- Size or capacity. Litres for fridges and freezers, kilograms for washers, HP for air conditioners, inches for TVs. Buying too small is the most common regret.
- Features. Smart TV, QLED, digital or manual controls, grill function on a microwave. Pay for features you will use.
- Price and monthly figure. Look at the cash price and the 4-month hire purchase figure together. Check how hire purchase works before you decide.
- After-sales support. Ask who handles faults, how to reach them and what the warranty covers. Get the answer from us in writing on WhatsApp so you are not relying on memory later.
Be careful with brand claims
You will hear strong opinions: this brand lasts forever, that one breaks in a year. Treat those as stories, not facts. Nobody can honestly judge a brand from one fridge in one house. Better evidence is a clear spec sheet, a sensible warranty, a shop that is easy to reach and a product that fits your power supply and space.
If a product has a model number, such as the Novo 186C or the LG 70UT80, search it. Reading the actual specification is more reliable than reading the logo.
Match the product to your situation
A small family in a one-bedroom flat has different needs from a provision shop or a church kitchen. Some quick pointers.
A shop owner buying a freezer should focus on litres and how much stock must be kept cold. A student or young couple buying a first fridge might prefer a compact table top or a mid-size fridge. A family with many clothes to wash should think about washer capacity before brand. In each case, tell us your budget and room and we can suggest two or three options from different brands to compare.
Questions to ask before you pay
Before you commit to any brand, put these questions to us or any seller. What exactly is the model number? What is covered if the product develops a fault, and for how long? Who do I contact, and how? Is the product in stock today? Does it suit my power supply and space? Getting clear answers is a better test of a good purchase than any slogan. Write the answers down, or keep the WhatsApp chat, so you can refer back later.
Ready to buy?
Not sure which brand fits? Send us your budget, the room size and what you need the product for, and we will suggest a short list from what we have in stock. You can pay cash or spread the cost over 4 months with hire purchase, and eligible customers can also ask about GCB Bank's Buy Now Pay Later programme, subject to GCB approval.
