Choosing LED Bulbs and Lighting for Your Home and Shop

Choosing a bulb used to be simple: you picked a wattage and that was that. LED bulbs changed this. Two bulbs with very different wattages can give the same brightness, and the colour of the light can make a room feel warm and relaxing or sharp and clinical. This guide explains the basics in plain language so you can pick the right bulb for each space in your home or shop.
Lumens, not watts
Watts tell you how much electricity a bulb uses. Lumens tell you how bright it is. With older filament bulbs the two moved together, which is why we learned to shop by watts. LEDs produce much more light for each watt, so the wattage on the box no longer tells you how bright the bulb will be.
When you compare bulbs, look for the lumen figure on the packaging. A higher lumen number means a brighter bulb. Then look at the watts to see how much power it draws. The ideal is a bulb with enough lumens for the room at a low wattage. Lower wattage for the same brightness helps keep your electricity bill down, which matters when power costs are a concern for a household or a shop.
Warm white or cool white?
The colour of the light is measured in kelvins (K) and usually described in words:
- Warm white (around 2700K to 3000K): soft, yellowish and cosy.
- Neutral or natural white (around 4000K): balanced and clean.
- Cool white or daylight (around 5000K to 6500K): bluish-white, bright and crisp.
Neither is better in all cases. It depends on what you do in the room. Keep the same colour within one room, because mixing warm and cool bulbs looks uneven.
Which light for which room?
Bedrooms and living rooms: warm white is the usual choice, because it feels relaxed in the evening. For flexibility, use lamps with warm bulbs alongside a main light.
Kitchens: go brighter and cooler so you can see what you are cutting and cooking. Neutral to cool white works well, and extra light above the work surface helps.
Bathrooms: bright, clear light helps with grooming. Make sure bulbs and fittings suit damp conditions.
Study areas: cool or neutral white helps visibility for reading and writing. A desk lamp gives targeted light for homework.
Shops and stalls: bright, neutral to cool white makes products look clear and the shop look clean. If you sell clothes, fabrics or food, check how colours look under your lights, because very cool or very warm light can change how things appear.
Outdoors, gates and walkways: choose bulbs and fittings made for outdoor use, bright enough to make steps and entrances safe.
How many bulbs do you need?
Bigger rooms and rooms where you do detailed tasks need more total lumens. Instead of one very bright bulb in the centre, spread several lower-power lights around the room. This avoids dark corners and glare. In a shop, light the shelves and counters, not only the middle of the floor.
A simple way to plan is to walk the room at night, note the dark spots and the places where you read, cook or count stock, and put light there first. Replace bulbs in groups so the colour and brightness match across the room.
Think about switching too. Putting different areas on separate switches lets you light only what you need, and that saves electricity.
Quality and safety basics.
Cheap bulbs of unknown quality can flicker, fade quickly or fail early. Look for clear information on the packaging, such as lumens, colour temperature and wattage. Make sure the bulb base fits your fitting, since common types include screw and pin bases. If you are not sure, take the old bulb with you or send us a photo. Always switch off power before changing a bulb, and use a qualified electrician for any wiring work.
Lighting and the rest of your setup
Lighting works together with your appliances. In a shop with chest freezers or fridges, good lighting helps customers see what you stock. A Novo Chest Freezer 195 Litres at GH₵ 3,500 can sit in a well-lit corner of a provisions shop, for example. In a living room, a 43 inch smart TV at GH₵ 2,600 is more comfortable to watch with soft background lighting rather than a harsh overhead bulb. Prices can change, so confirm on WhatsApp.
