Hire Purchase in Ghana: How It Works and How to Use It Well

Not everyone can pay the full price of a fridge, TV or air conditioner at once. Hire purchase lets you take home what you need and pay in monthly instalments. Used carefully, it is a practical way to spread cost. Used carelessly, it becomes a burden. This guide explains how it works at Patmos Varieties and how to make it work for you.
What hire purchase means
With hire purchase, you agree to pay for an item over a set number of months instead of paying everything upfront. The total you pay across the instalments can be higher than the cash price, because you are being given time to pay. That is why it is important to compare the two numbers before you commit, and not only look at the monthly figure.
How our 4-month plan works
At Patmos Varieties, every product page shows the cash price and a monthly hire purchase figure over 4 months. The steps are simple:
- Choose your product and note the monthly figure shown on the page.
- Message us on WhatsApp on 055 991 5778 to confirm the current price and monthly amount, because prices can change.
- Terms are agreed with the team on WhatsApp before any payment is made.
- We carry out verification and prepare an agreement for you to review.
- Once the agreement is in place, the process continues according to what you agreed.
Nothing is rushed, and you should not pay anything until you understand the terms. You can read more on our hire purchase page and in the FAQ.
A worked example
Let us use the Sigma 1.5HP Split Air Conditioner.
- Cash price: GH₵ 3,200
- Monthly hire purchase figure: GH₵ 896
- Number of months: 4
Total over 4 months is GH₵ 896 multiplied by 4, which is GH₵ 3,584. The difference compared with paying cash is GH₵ 384. So the question to ask yourself is simple: is it worth GH₵ 384 to spread the cost over four months? If cash is available and you can wait, saving up may be cheaper. If you need the cooling now, for sleeping, a home office or a small business, the monthly route may make sense.
Always run this calculation for your own product. Prices and monthly figures can change, so confirm the numbers on WhatsApp before you do your sums.
How to budget for monthly payments
A monthly commitment is only a good idea if you can meet it every month without stress. A few tips:
- Take your regular income after rent, food and transport, and see whether the monthly figure fits comfortably.
- If your income is irregular, such as trading income, base your plan on a weak month, not your best month.
- Set aside the amount as soon as you earn, instead of waiting until the due date.
- Keep a small buffer for emergencies, so one bad week does not mean a missed payment.
- Do not stack several instalment plans at the same time.
Choose items that earn or protect value
Hire purchase works best for items that save or make money. A chest freezer for a provision shop, a fridge that stops food from spoiling, or an air conditioner for a workspace you rent out are all examples. For example, the Novo Chest Freezer 215 Litres shows GH₵ 3,800 cash or GH₵ 1,064 a month. Think about what the item will bring in or save you.
Wants such as a bigger TV can still be bought this way, but be extra honest about whether the monthly figure fits your budget.
Other ways to pay
Besides cash and hire purchase, you have other options:
- Crowdfunding. You can start a campaign for a product and invite friends and family to contribute. Learn more on our crowdfunding page.
- GCB Bank Buy Now Pay Later. Eligible customers can ask us about GCB Bank's programme, which runs for up to 24 months and is subject to GCB approval.
Online payment through Hubtel is not available yet, so please do not wait for it. Order and arrange payment through WhatsApp.
Questions to ask before you agree
- What is the exact monthly amount and the total over all 4 months?
- What is the cash price today, and has anything changed?
- What happens if I need to talk to you about a payment date?
- Can I see the agreement before I pay anything?
Common mistakes to avoid
The biggest mistake is looking only at the monthly figure and ignoring the total. The second is choosing a bigger product than you need just because the monthly number looks small. Take a moment, compare the total with the cash price, and pick the product that fits your life and your income. If you are unsure, ask questions. A good seller will be happy to explain every number.
