Cash, Hire Purchase or GCB Buy Now Pay Later: How to Choose

Cash, Hire Purchase or GCB Buy Now Pay Later: How to Choose

A new fridge, TV or mattress is rarely a small purchase. Often the real question is not "what do I want?" but "how should I pay for it?" At Patmos Varieties you can pay cash, spread payment over 4 months with hire purchase, or, if you are eligible, ask about GCB Bank's Buy Now Pay Later programme. Each suits a different situation. This guide compares them plainly so you can decide with a clear head.

Option 1: Pay cash

Cash is the simplest route. You pay the listed price, the item is yours, and there is nothing to track afterwards. Every product on our site shows its cash price, for example the Novo 200RF Refrigerator 195 Litres at GH₵ 3,800.

Cash makes sense when the money is already set aside for this purchase and paying it will not leave you short for rent, school fees or business stock. It is a poor choice if paying in full empties your emergency savings. A fridge that arrives while you cannot afford transport or food is not a win.

Option 2: Patmos 4-month hire purchase

Hire purchase lets you pay in monthly parts over 4 months. Each product page shows the monthly figure next to the cash price. For example, the same Novo 200RF Refrigerator shows GH₵ 1,061 a month, and the Sigma 43 inch Smart TV (Android 14) shows GH₵ 730 a month against a cash price of GH₵ 2,600.

Notice that the monthly figures, multiplied by 4, come to more than the cash price. That is normal for instalment plans: you pay a little extra for the convenience of spreading the cost. Compare the two numbers on the product page and decide whether the difference is worth it to you. Prices and monthly figures can change, so confirm the current amounts on WhatsApp before you commit.

Hire purchase works best when you have a steady income, such as a salary or regular business turnover, and can cover the monthly amount without borrowing from somewhere else. You can read how it works on our hire purchase page.

Option 3: GCB Buy Now Pay Later

GCB Bank runs a Buy Now Pay Later programme that can stretch payments for up to 24 months. Eligible customers can ask us about it. Two points matter here. First, approval is decided by GCB, not by Patmos, so being able to ask is not the same as being approved. Second, a longer period usually means smaller monthly amounts but a longer commitment, so look carefully at the full cost over the whole period.

We do not quote interest rates or fees for the GCB programme, because those are set by the bank. Terms are confirmed before you commit, and you should see them in full before you agree to anything.

Questions to ask before you choose

Whichever route you pick, ask these questions first:

A trustworthy seller or lender answers these without fuss. You should never feel rushed into saying yes.

Budgeting tips that actually help

Start with your income, not the product. Write down what comes in each month and what must go out: rent, transport, food, school fees, church or family obligations, and any existing loans. What remains is what you can safely commit.

A useful rule of thumb is to keep the new monthly payment small enough that a slightly bad month would not break it. If your income is irregular, such as a trader whose sales rise and fall, favour a shorter plan you can finish quickly, or save part of the price first and pay cash.

Think about the value of the item too. A fridge or chest freezer can help a food business keep stock fresh, and a washing machine saves hours at home. If the product helps you earn or save, a payment plan is easier to justify than for something purely for comfort. Still, be honest with yourself about the numbers.

There is also another idea. If the item is for a family, church or community group, you can start a campaign on our crowdfunding page and let friends and relatives contribute towards it.

So which one should you pick?

Browse the shop, note the cash price and monthly figure for what you like, and compare the options side by side before deciding.
